Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun. But what insights has this year granted me, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This component of beginning university can be quite daunting, and if you’re an upcoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my very first day of moving into my lodging, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. However, now I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some amazing friendships here at university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? It’s important to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or feeling at ease, don’t fret! There are countless ice-breaker chances and events to aid in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is crucial. With a wide array of unique individuals throughout the program and university, you’re guaranteed to find those who share your mindset.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. The shift from A-levels was quite profound, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more significant. Being in such an environment can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same situation. If you’re confused about something, it’s highly likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges that students endure. They offer empathy and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did so by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with faculty members, which is priceless. There are plenty of ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year revealed that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It taught me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment even in the face of stressors like exams and deadlines.
