Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a domain my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back at the past year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, trials, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This is unquestionably one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as an upcoming student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with a few casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that taking a bold step at the onset of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also gleaned that if there’s one thing to be, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the content. There was unquestionably a significant escalation from A-levels, and in some instances, an even larger transition from the first semester to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel a sense of inadequacy. Several factors aided me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experiences. If something eludes your understanding, I can nearly guarantee there are others who feel the same. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away in your first year. Turn to your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier of taking leaps – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which proves to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous pathways to engage with faculty, and it certainly ranks among the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to seize the support offered to you. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has imparted that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support channels provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated, and it has illustrated how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
