Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a new student. Wading into unfamiliar territory wasn’t something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects when starting university, and if you’re contemplating your own enrollment, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too daunted to step out and make introductions. However, today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s advisable to take that initial leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in meeting others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of people in the program and the university, you’re certain to encounter others who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the subject matter. There was a significant shift from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. What supported me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you encounter something you don’t comprehend, it’s likely others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Ask for assistance from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication concerning our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before—I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial choices you can make for your well-being! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
