Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead as I prepared to begin my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Dipping into the deep end wasn’t something my formerly shy and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I realize it has been rich in personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the most daunting initial challenges was forming friendships. This can indeed be intimidating when starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it may rank among your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, daunted by the prospect of stepping out and greeting others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever known during my time at university and within this course. I have a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small talk with others in similar situations. I discovered it’s beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always good for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar circumstances. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others do not either. Therefore, seek help. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy toward students and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are various opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re provided. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to have fun even in the presence of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
