Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, hurdles, and immense enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more fearsome elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might top your list of worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had at university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is invariably the best strategy. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will arise to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can choose one thing to be, be yourself. With a multitude of diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and to some extent, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something confounds you, I can nearly assure you there are others who are equally perplexed. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and keep continual communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the academic year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are ample opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never receive too much help!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the various support avenues accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never isolated and how to relish my experiences despite challenges like exams and deadlines.
