Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once shy and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what have I discovered this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most challenging hurdles was creating friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are perusing this as a prospective student, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term kicking off, I spent the entire day hidden in my room because I felt too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I have formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it merely took engaging in small talk with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also found that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to find others like you.

Another difficulty was the workload and complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, even a larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also don’t comprehend it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Ask for assistance from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and realize that students often face difficulties. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one right at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to maximize the assistance you are given. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the numerous support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
