Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current position?

One of the early and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student perusing this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into accommodation, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the entire day in my room, too afraid to go outside and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this experience? I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be many ice-breaking chances and events to help you engage with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a wide range of diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me combat this feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost guarantee that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, yet I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to utilize the available support. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has instilled in me the understanding that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the wide array of support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite stressors like examinations and deadlines.
