Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more challenging aspects of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I felt too daunted to go out and greet others. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in some light conversation with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you aren’t fully prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that above all, being yourself is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and university, you’re destined to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you find yourself perplexed by something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to the students and keep consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously—I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with staff, and it’s certainly among the best things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support that is offered to you. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the plethora of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has instructed me on how to find joy amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
