Authored by Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Entering the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This distinctly ranks among the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my halls, a few days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the whole day concealing myself in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it began with casual conversations with others facing similar experiences. So, what have I taken away from this? I’ve realized that making a bold move at the year’s beginning is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of coursework and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and in some respects, there was an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might notice others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same circumstances. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also do. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Ask for help from your colleagues and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They empathize with students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I’ve mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the outset of the year by becoming a year representative for well-being. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are abundant opportunities to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to harness the support that is available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the numerous support avenues offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy amid stressors such as examinations and deadlines.
