Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about the journey ahead as I was about to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not an experience my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be at the top of your list of concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, just a few days before classes started, I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assuredly say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take risks at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and campus, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first semester to the second. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you fail to grasp a concept, chances are others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are extraordinary. They are genuinely invested in your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards us and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that anxious feelings about university are often misplaced and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to appreciate life despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
