Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. The prospect of stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, this might be a significant worry for you. On my first day of moving into my dorm, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, today I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the closest friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I absorb? It’s wise to take a leap at the year’s outset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals at the university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a notable increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and question your own capabilities. A few strategies aided me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are facing the same issue. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had capitalized on it sooner. I spoke of taking chances earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never alone and taught me how to relish my experience despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
