Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! However, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was the process of making friends. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and it might be a significant worry if you’re an incoming student. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to step outside and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be plenty of opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diversity of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the level of content difficulty. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was keeping in mind that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Seek support from your peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and ensure ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it stands as one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance made available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
