Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a future student, this may be a significant concern. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can assertively say that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? It’s beneficial to make a bold move at the year’s onset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse crowd across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter individuals like yourself.
Another hurdle was the volume of workload and the challenge of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same struggles. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly assure you there are others who also don’t. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps – I embraced one at the year’s commencement by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are myriad ways to become acquainted with the staff, and it’s definitely among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to leverage the support provided. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be diminished with the various support mechanisms available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment amid challenges such as exams and deadlines.
