Ten months back, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead as I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my once-timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This aspect often stands out as one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it’s likely a concern for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the thought of venturing out to meet new people. Now, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. What did I grasp? It’s essential to take a plunge at the year’s outset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, no need to fret! Numerous ice-breaking events will occur to facilitate connections. Furthermore, if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse community throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals like yourself.
Another obstacle was managing the academic load and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a significant leap from A-levels, and an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can have a negative impact on your self-esteem; observing peers studying might make you feel less capable. What assisted me was keeping in mind that everyone shares the same experience. If a concept goes over your head, it’s highly likely others are struggling too. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards us and foster open communication about our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the finest actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to capitalize on the support available. There’s no such thing as too much help!
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
