Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my once reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year provide, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often a significant concern for new university students, and if you’re a prospective student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my move-in day, merely days before classes commenced, I remained in my room for the entirety of the day, too daunted to step out and engage with others. Now, I can proudly claim that I have forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, commencing with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. I also understood that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group at both the course and university levels, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests.
An additional hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant increase from A-level studies, particularly between the first and second terms. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What benefited me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something confounds you, chances are it confuses others too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to build relationships with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be soothed with the support from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
