By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was set to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I see a year enriched with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, I can proudly say I’ve built some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with people experiencing similar situations. So, what lesson did I learn? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking situations and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If there’s something you don’t comprehend, I can almost assure you that others are in the same position. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had sought it out earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to build relationships with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have a good time even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
