Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I got ready to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for new university students. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, I remained in my room the entire day, too overwhelmed to introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships here, creating a second family within Imperial. It began with casual conversations with others experiencing similar situations. I discovered that taking risks at the beginning of the year pays off. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are social activities and events designed to help you connect with others. Be authentic; amidst such a diverse crowd, you will discover peers who resonate with you.

Another difficulty was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, with an even greater transition from the first to the second term. Observing others study and feeling inadequate can take a toll on your confidence. Keep in mind that everyone is facing the same challenges. If a concept eludes you, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Seek assistance from classmates and faculty; it’s essential during your first year.

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students face, ensuring open communication about concerns. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had sought it out sooner. Taking the initiative to become a year well-being representative allowed me to establish connections with the staff. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it proves to be advantageous. Make the most of the resources available; you can never have too much support!

This year has shown me that apprehensions regarding university are frequently unjustified and can be mitigated with help from both staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
