By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid self was used to. Looking back, I see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the early and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for new university students. On my inaugural day in my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to interact with others. Now, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. I discovered that it’s beneficial to take the initiative at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with other students. Just be yourself, and you’ll discover like-minded individuals.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the coursework and the difficulty of the material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. This can be taxing on your self-confidence, but keep in mind that everyone is navigating the same path. If you find something challenging to comprehend, it’s likely that others are as well. Seek assistance from classmates and faculty; it’s vital in your first year.
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They consistently communicate regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I took the plunge by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to connect with the faculty. There are various ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s advantageous. Make the most of the assistance available; you can never have an excess!
This year has taught me that anxiety about university is often baseless and can be alleviated through support from staff and peers. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and have discovered how to enjoy myself in spite of the stress that comes with exams and deadlines.
