Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was a significant departure from my previously shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be your primary concern. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can state with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all through engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the year’s beginning. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be abundant ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you meet others. I’ve also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a wide range of diverse people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant transition from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that others are in the same position. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My principal takeaway is to embrace the assistance provided. You can never receive too much support!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
