Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is frequently one of the most daunting, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day retreating to my room, daunted by the idea of stepping outside and meeting people. However, today I can assertively say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I learned that taking a courageous step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that above all, you should be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a significant increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped alleviate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who are just as lost. So, do seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are truly exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to meet the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My principal takeaway from this part of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
