Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day moving into my lodging, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly claim that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s best to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like you.
Another challenge was the level of workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely an increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such surroundings can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same difficulties. If you don’t grasp something, I can practically assure you there are others who also don’t comprehend it. So, seek help. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Request assistance from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned before about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can pursue for your benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support avenues accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it’s illustrated to me how to have a good time amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
