Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what’s my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This can be one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re an incoming student, it may pose a significant worry. On my moving-in day, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the entire day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet new faces. Now, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? It’s beneficial to take that leap at the beginning of the academic year. If you’re not yet prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with peers. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With a vibrant array of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can influence your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you find something perplexing, there’s a good chance others share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and genuinely understand the challenges students endure. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication about our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the academic year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is priceless. There are countless opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway is to embrace the assistance available. You can never receive too much support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support provided by faculty and peers. It has illustrated that I’m never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
