Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously reserved and timid self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re considering this as a prospective student, it might be among your largest worries. On my initial day moving into my housing, just a few days prior to the semester beginning, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can assuredly say that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s essential to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you’re not fully prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse mix of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find your tribe.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and even a more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to classmates and staff for support!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students endure. They relate to students and maintain consistent contact throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully harness the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke of taking chances earlier—I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it truly stands as one of the most beneficial choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unsubstantiated and can be mitigated by the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like examinations and deadlines.
