Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is unquestionably one of the more intimidating components of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and greet others. Sitting here today, however, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with engaging in casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate your interaction with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, embody your true self. There exists such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university; you are sure to encounter people like yourself.

Another challenge I had to surmount was the volume of work and complexity of the content. There was indeed a notable shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always gentle on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that several others are also in the same predicament. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from both your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students often face difficulties. They show understanding toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned earlier about making leaps – I took one at the dawn of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

On a broader scale, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be alleviated through the plethora of support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find joy in life alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
