Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was set to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not the comfort zone of my previously introverted self. Reflecting now, I recognize a year of academic growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating facets of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my moving-in day, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of stepping out and greeting others. Yet today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I grasped? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also understood that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another challenge I had to overcome was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who are also puzzled. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to develop in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow students and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They are compassionate towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to build relationships with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this element of university life is to leverage the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
Overall, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated by the plethora of support options provided by staff and peers. It has taught me that I am never on this journey alone, and it has shown me how to find joy even amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
