Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was making connections. This often ranks as one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days prior to the term kicking off, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what have I realized? It’s ideal to make a bold move at the start of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you bond with others. Additionally, I found that authenticity is crucial. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in several respects, an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; witnessing others studying can leave you feeling inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming this, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, odds are others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial insight to grasp in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They truly want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep communication open throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully make use of the support services until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has shown me that the feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to embrace enjoyment even in the face of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
