Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my previously shy and reserved self. Looking back now, I realize I have experienced a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating facets of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of the semester, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and everything initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will aid you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be a challenge for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that others are confused as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and consistently communicate with us regarding our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly among the best actions you can take for your personal development! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the help available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to relish experiences alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
