Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This aspect of starting university can be quite daunting, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it could be among your primary worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term, I spent the whole day retreating in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever experienced, at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was some casual conversation with individuals in the same boat. So, what has been my lesson? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can be one thing, be yourself. There are a multitude of diverse individuals across the course and the university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are fantastic. They desire for you to succeed and realize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are many avenues to interact with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided to you. You can never have too much help!

On a broader scale, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be diminished with the variety of support available from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
