Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the earliest and most formidable hurdles encountered was forging friendships. This often ranks among the most daunting elements of university initiation, and for prospective students, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my housing, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to emerge and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve established some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in comparable circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s usually beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and campus, you’re certain to find like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; witnessing others study might leave you feeling inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are many others who are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The instructors in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with our experiences and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated through the range of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun alongside pressures like exams and deadlines.
