Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of initiating university life, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with peers in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to aid in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. There is a vast range of individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter others like yourself.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me in navigating that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that others share that confusion, too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to assimilate in your freshman year. Ask peers and faculty for help!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I referenced taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous actions you can undertake for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university life is to seize the assistance you’re being provided. You can never have too much!
On a broader scale, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both in anticipation of and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be alleviated through the extensive support available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to relish my time despite sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
