Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year rich with personal development, challenges, and abundant fun! What insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day retreating to my room because I was too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say I have made some of the best friends I’ve ever known, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it commenced with engaging in light conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with your peers. I also recognized that if there’s one thing you can be, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you will surely encounter like-minded people.
An additional challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me to surpass that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you’re struggling to grasp, I can almost assure you that there are others who are in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. This might be the single most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Seek assistance from your fellow students and the staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter obstacles. They relate to the students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t extensively utilize the supportive services until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. I talked about taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support avenues available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and revealed how to enjoy myself amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
