Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student perusing this, it could be one of your primary concerns. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to come out and introduce myself. However, today I am proud to say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? It’s beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking possibilities and occasions to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being genuine is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few things aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy toward students and keep in constant touch with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to bond with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never have an excess of support!
All in all, this year has imparted to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never isolated and has taught me how to enjoy myself despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
