Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was familiar with. Now, reflecting on that time, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room out of intimidation to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively declare that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in casual conversations with fellow newcomers. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will be available to facilitate your interaction with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge I needed to address was the volume of work and the difficulty of the content. The leap from A-levels was significant, and in certain respects, the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a scenario can be challenging for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares your struggle. If you’re puzzled by something, I can nearly guarantee that there are several others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from both your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have an excess!
In broad terms, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated by the vast array of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment alongside stressors such as exams and deadlines.
