Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and unsure about the future. I was embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what knowledge have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was the process of making friends. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and for any prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, daunted by the thought of meeting new acquaintances. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all kicked off with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. I discovered that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you aren’t prepared, that’s okay! There are numerous ice-breakers and gatherings to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if you can be anything, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; you might feel inadequate in comparison to others. What aided me was keeping in mind that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something that confuses you, chances are others are perplexed too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This is perhaps the most vital lesson from the first year. Ask for assistance from your peers and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend student difficulties. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took an initiative at the beginning by becoming a year well-being representative, which provided me the chance to engage with staff members, a beneficial opportunity. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year taught me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the help available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never alone and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
