Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my typically shy and reserved personality was familiar with. Looking back now, I notice a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may rank high on your list of concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of classes, I stayed entirely in my room, feeling too shy to venture out and meet others. Today, I can with confidence claim that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I taken away from this? It’s wise to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities designed to help you connect with others. Additionally, among all the varied personalities at the university, be sure to stay true to yourself. You’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests.
An additional challenge was the overwhelming workload and the complexity of the material. The difference from A-levels was indeed significant, and in some respects, the shift between the first and second terms was even more pronounced. Being immersed in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; observing others studying might lead you to feel inadequate. What supported me was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can virtually assure you that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from classmates and instructors!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support available until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have too much!
In summation, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
