Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my residence, a few days prior to the beginning of classes, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to emerge and meet others. Today, though, I can proudly insist that I have formed some of the finest friendships here at this university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that making an effort at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also found that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you are sure to connect with like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the heaviness of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a setting can shake your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is encountering the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others are experiencing the same confusion. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the single most crucial skill to cultivate in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties students encounter. They are compassionate and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to embrace the offered assistance. You can never have too much support!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
