Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to begin my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all from engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s wise to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are myriad ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find peers who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying diligently and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, others likely don’t either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication with us concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
