Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was building friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On the very first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too scared to step outside and meet others. Today, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s essential to take bold steps at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals in the program and university, you’re likely to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel unworthy compared to your peers. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I assure you others are in the same boat. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are many ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do! My primary takeaway is to embrace the support available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during my time at university, are often unjustified and can be eased with the assistance from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I am never alone and learned how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
