Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year brought, and what is my current perspective?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a major worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, today I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a few casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be plenty of ice-breaker activities and events to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.

An additional hurdle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was a significant escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What got me through was the affirmation that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly guarantee that others feel the same way. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial competency to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often irrational and can be eased through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
