Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into uncharted territory was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is typically one of the most frightening elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can say with confidence that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever had, both at this institution and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with simple conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a bold step at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. With so many varied individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. What assisted me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, chances are, others are in the same boat. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point: the faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain regular communication regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearing its end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking risks — I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position allowed me to engage with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main lesson is to utilize the support offered. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often irrational and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy despite challenges like exams and deadlines.
