Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Entering the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and shy self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and for any incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too nervous to step out and greet anyone. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what lesson did I take away? I realized that starting the year with some boldness is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be genuine. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you will surely encounter those who share your mindset.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, a more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a scenario can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several elements assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the recognition that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to comprehend, there’s a high likelihood that others are having trouble as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They understand our challenges and ensure ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking bold steps—one I took at the beginning of the year was becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much help!
In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, whether experienced before or during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
