Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not typical for my former, shy, and reserved personality. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what revelations has this year brought, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of entering university, and if you are reading this as an upcoming student, it may indeed be one of your foremost concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can confidently assert that I have formed some of the finest friendships I have ever had here at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I discovered that it’s advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, fret not! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. There are so many diverse individuals across the program and university; you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the coursework demand and content complexity. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always conducive to confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in managing that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If there is something you don’t comprehend, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who also lack understanding. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face difficulties. They understand students’ challenges and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the support resources until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned at the outset about taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My main takeaway from this component of university is to fully utilize the assistance being provided. There is no such thing as too much!
In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both preceding and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the vast array of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.
