Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my previously bashful and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting back, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?
One of the earliest and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you find yourself reading this as a prospective student, it could be one of your major concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and greet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life, here at this university and in this course. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also realized that if you can embody one trait, be yourself. There is a vast array of individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter others who resonate with you.
Another challenge I had to tackle was the level of workload and content complexity. The shift from A-levels was significant, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy on your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate in comparison. Some strategies helped me navigate that experience, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggle. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that at least a few others are equally lost. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to master in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for guidance from your classmates and staff!
This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain continual communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about making leaps – I did indeed take a leap at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to forge connections with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this particular aspect of university life is to capitalize on the resources being offered to you. You can never receive too much help!
In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unwarranted and can be alleviated by the plethora of support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has informed me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
