Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most daunting hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently considered one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On the day I moved into my accommodation just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to come out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly affirm that I’ve made some fantastic friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial through engaging in light conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? It’s wise to take a gamble at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. Moreover, if you could be one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and institution, you will surely discover those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a stark transition from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can challenge your confidence; observing others study might lead you to feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others share the same confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They are sympathetic and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year regarding our issues. Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
