Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a reality my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was establishing friendships. This often ranks among the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the entire day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what insight have I gained? I discovered that taking a risk at the year’s onset is beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the increased workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me through this was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to internalize in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and grasp the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain consistent dialogue with us throughout the year about our apprehensions. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking risks earlier – I embraced one by stepping up as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly worthwhile. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the finest decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support accessible from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite pressures like examinations and deadlines.
