Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the deep end was not a familiar experience for my previously timid and introverted self. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges faced was forming friendships. This indeed ranks as one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the year’s outset. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be abundant opportunities for ice-breaking and events aimed at helping you connect with fellow students. Additionally, I discovered that if you can embody anything, be authentic. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to find those who share your interests.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you are confused about something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned taking risks at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role afforded me the opportunity to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous methods to interact with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the support being offered. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be alleviated with the plethora of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself while managing stresses such as exams and deadlines.
