Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something that my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! What insights has this year afforded me, and where do I stand now?

A significant and initially intimidating hurdle was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the beginning of classes, I spent the entire day shut in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. What did I take away from this? I discovered that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is essential. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. Furthermore, if you can be one thing, be yourself. With such a wide array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle I faced was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the subsequent one. Being in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, chances are others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson during your first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the hurdles students encounter. They relate to our experiences and maintain steady communication regarding our issues. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are various ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that the anxious feelings surrounding university are often misplaced and can be eased with the assistance readily available from both faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
