Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I currently stand?
One of the most significant and intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often a major concern when starting university, and if you’re considering this as a potential student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year can be beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There are abundant opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With the diversity of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being in this environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the assurance that everyone shares the same struggle. If you’re confused about something, I can almost guarantee that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I alluded to taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to become familiar with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much of it!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has reminded me that I’m never solitary and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
