Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I got ready to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my introverted and quiet nature was used to. Looking back on the prior academic year, I recognize a path rich in personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This frequently emerges as a major worry for incoming university students. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, I remained in my room the whole time, too daunted to meet others. However, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all through engaging in casual conversations with fellow students in similar predicaments. So, what have I discovered? It’s beneficial to take that leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, no need to fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities and events exist to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and across the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another obstacle I faced was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a striking leap from A-levels and an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being in this environment can impact your confidence; observing others study can make you feel inadequate. What helped me was remembering that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your fellow students and staff for assistance!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges faced by students. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I referred to making leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for your personal development! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like examinations and deadlines.
