Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, scared, and uncertain regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This certainly stands out as one of the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your major worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I have built a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that above all, you should be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the awareness that everyone is encountering similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can practically assure you there are others who are also confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my following point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep constant communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
